Hex Bugs

I only used these in one film- Spiders From Space. I only had one available, but thanks to some clever green screening, I made it appear as though there were three. These things are pretty cool little toys. They're remote controlled and the walking motion looks great. At first glance you wouldn't think of them as movie props, but it just goes to show that you can make a movie about basically anything. The only limit is your imagination.

Creepy Old Dolls

The one you see in the picture is pretty old. I think my mother played with that thing when she was young. Anyway, it's a well known fact that old dolls are creepy. Creepy enough to star in a horror movie, in fact. Seeing that thing moving around and chasing people is right down there in the uncanny valley. When making a movie about a living doll, I think it's always a good idea to have some suspense before the action. Let the audience have a good long look at that creepy doll. Make them feel uneasy, add some creepy music too. Trust me, it makes it so much better. So if you have an old doll lying around in your house that you can use, try experimenting with that. Dolls make great horror movie villains!

Lego

To me, there is nothing more perfect for stop motion than Lego. Some people might prefer clay, but I think Lego is way more fun and easy to use. The constraction figures (Bionicle, Hero Factory, etc.) are highly poseable and hold their pose, making them ideal for stop motion. Lego System (bricks, minifigures) is also fantastic because the minifigures stick onto the studs, meaning you can balance them on one foot and they'll still stay. Plus you can build the perfect setpiece/backdrop using only Lego bricks! To see a separate entry on how stop motion works, go to
