About No Budget Films

Who is No Budget Films? Well, back in 2010 when we first started out, we were pretty much just a couple kids who liked to make cheesy videos together. And really, when it comes down to it, that's still what we are today (even though we're older now). The guy who started the whole thing was none other than the one and only me: Nathan Nguyen, aka GreatNate98. It was on August 13th, 2010, when I first opened my YouTube account. I had several ideas for the name in mind, including "Zilladude" and "Greatnathan" or something or other. But eventually, I settled on a name that I thought sounded memorable- GreatNate98, a name that anyone could remember because it rhymed! A little narcissistic on my part? Maybe. But it's a name that'd force me to strive for greatness!

As a kid (and still to this day) I was always a fan of dinosaurs, monsters, and pretty much anything with big 'ol teeth and claws. Something about that primal ferocity, the awesome sense of power, combined with some gnarly designs and really cool techniques used to bring them to life on the screen. I'd spend my days drawing the beasts that gripped my imagination, and watching films and documentaries about them. Some of the best ones I remember watching are from the BBC Walking With series, like Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with Beasts. I remember being really inspired by these documentaries, and I was fascinated with how they were made. I was amazed to find out they were created in part with lifelike animatronics and puppets. This planted the first seeds of filmmaking in my mind- I thought that if I could get my hands on a puppet that looked lifelike enough, I too could make great films like these! And it wasn't just these ones  either: There were the Jurassic Park movies, the 90's Goosebumps show, old B-monster movies (such as Them! [1954] and Unknown Island [1948]), The Dark Crystal (1982), Labyrinth (1986), and of course the Godzilla films. Even homemade YouTube films, like Blaisingm's Dino Dreams and TheCyberController's Attack of the Nightmare-a-saurus, were pivotal in my inspiration. They made me think, wow, maybe if they can do it, so can I! Bottom line: I loved all of these because of the unique way they were made, with practical effects like puppets, animatronics, and costumes. CGI is also an amazing special effects tool, but my young mind felt much more inspired by the more tangible effects that were really there, in front of the camera. For my own films, I didn't know the first thing about 3D animation, but I did know how to use a puppet. And so, that's the path I would take- No Budget Films, using inexpensive techniques and props that a kid could get his hands on.

As a kid filmmaker, I didn't have many resources to use. I'd pretty much just have to use whatever I've already got, resulting in a homemade feel that earned my "studio" the title of No Budget Films. Creature effects were puppets, sound effects were downloaded for free (with questionable legality), there were no scripts, and editing was done with Windows Movie Maker. Today, things are done a little more professionally, but the core idea of simplicity is still there. To this day, we still spend very little on our films. It's a tradition. Instead of putting a ton of money into making these films, we prefer to focus on having a great time making them. That's really all it's about in the end.

Even before No Budget Films, I still enjoyed myself with the art of filmmaking by making little Lego stop motion animations. I was inspired by the many YouTube channels dedicated to making those sorts of things, and at first I thought that my YouTube channel would become one of those as well. Not many people know this, but my first YouTube video was actually a Lego Spongebob stop motion. But while stop motion remained a fun hobby for me until 2011 or so, I soon began to focus more and more on live action. My films were often tied to whatever interest I had at the time—Spongebob, Goosebumps, dinosaurs. Dinosaurs and monsters have stuck the longest, coming to be the thing my channel on YouTube is known for, though it's by no means the limit.

The folks you see on camera in my movies are my friends, who you can learn more about in the Meet the Crew section. Acting was never really my area, though I still have made numerous appearances in my films. I'd say I've come to specialize more in the realm of writing and editing—y'know, the stuff that goes on behind the camera. Some of my friends are more into acting than others, but it's pretty much good fun for everyone (unless of course my friends secretly hate filmmaking). A couple of my friends have branched off from just the GreatNate98 films, and have started to make their own video content as well. You can find links to their channels in the Meet the Crew section, and I encourage you to check them out.
