An introduction for a film about mutant insects, which never gained any traction and faded into obscurity before it could be made.

Production notes:

I always wanted to make an action movie about giant insects, so one day in 2012 when my friend Cooper was over, I decided to get started on a grand prologue for the film which would show a tropical island being used as a nuclear testing site. The radiation would mutate the insects living there, and presto! Giant insects on the loose. However, despite my plans, I pretty much gave up on this movie for reasons I cannot entirely remember. Possibly laziness. Anyway, even though there isn’t much to this little intro sequence, it is notable for a couple reasons. For one, it was one of my bolder experiments with using miniature sets (That’s right, those hyper-realistic palm trees were in fact plastic toys). Secondly, and more importantly, this was my first time using real fire in my movies, as I didn’t know how to achieve it digitally just yet in those days. The new edit of this does incorporate a few new digital effects, including fire and explosions, but the original fire can still be seen. One thing that was cut out, however, was a shot where I throw dirt up into the air to try and simulate the nuclear blast. This was largely replaced by a digital explosion from Action Essentials 2. Bugs! was full of outlandish special effects experiments—another example was when I sprayed water in mist form to represent smoke from the nuclear explosion.

Fun fact: At one point in 2015 I made an awful attempt at continuing the film, and it ended up so atrocious that I vowed to never upload it... until 2019 that is, in the form of a separate video titled "Z Moore and the Creepy Crawlies of Doom".

Two beasts clash: The Tyrant Lizard, and the Meat Eating Bull! Who will survive?

Production notes:

This was the most successful of my films during its time. T-Rex vs Carnotaurus was the first of my videos to breach the 1 million view theshold, and due to its popularity has spawned the most sequels out of all my films. Interestingly, despite its popularity, T-Rex vs Carnotaurus is one of the simplest films I’ve ever made. There’s no fancy animation going on, no outstanding special effects, and no story to speak of. It’s just two dinosaur toys going at each other’s throats for a couple minutes. I guess that’s what people like, then. During the shooting of this thing, I tried to make my backyard seem like a prehistoric environment, but my efforts fall a little flat when you notice all these manmade objects sitting in the background. The primary purpose of this little film was to practice for the fight sequences I would eventually film for Dinosaur Attack 3 (2015). Ironically, T-Rex vs Carnotaurus gained far more views than Dinosaur Attack 3.

Milestones: First film to reach a million views

Production notes:

This Halloween film saw its first release on Facebook in October of 2013, but didn’t make it to YouTube until a couple months later. It had been a while since my last attempt at a horror movie, and this time I aimed to make it good. Was it a success? Nope. Hardly anyone saw it, with the first upload only earning around 3,000 views. My initial vision for the movie was to have a terrifying string of supernatural events, but the end result seems a bit random, and the plot didn’t really come together amazingly, so all in all this movie was average. In the spirit of my older movies, this was all filmed in one single night. Cooper and Idean had conflicting schedules, so cranking this out in time for Halloween proved to be a challenge. The story was originally going to feature Idean's character as a teen living with his mother, but was changed by request of Idean (I guess he wanted to be all “cool and grown up”). The production ended up being slightly rushed and shot out of order due to Cooper being picked up from my house earlier than Idean, but it all came together in the end. The creature effects were mostly done with Halloween props, with the exception of the dolls, which were my sister's. Mostly Ghostly was the first of my films to employ the use of make-up (namely Cooper's bloodied face).

T-Rex Green Screen Test (2013)

Release Dates:

Original Edit (privately): December 21st, 2013

Original Edit (publicly): April 10th, 2014

Re-Edit: August 12th, 2016

Puppeteering, photography, and editing by: Nathan Nguyen

An FX test using one of my Puppetoys T-Rexes. The method used to make the dinosaur appear large was applying the chroma key tool to the blue sky. In other words, the sky became one big green screen (or blue screen). I noticed that the background was shaking, so I actually animated the foreground to shake WITH the background. Although first released onto YouTube in 2014, the very earliest edit was actually privately released onto Facebook in 2013, which is why I categorize this clip as a 2013 video.
