This friend of Tim would appear to be the more normal one of the two, but nothing could be further from the truth. Kai is secretly some species of werewolf, and when in werewolf mode, is highly dangerous and unstable. For some reason the transformation happens during the daytime, making Kai unique among werewolves. Interestingly, it is possible to reason with him when in werewolf form, and he can even be "tamed" and given back the control of his human mind. Whether in werewolf or human form, Kai maintains great fighting prowess. Kai was quite easily able to defeat the Scarecrow, a "final boss" of sorts, in battle.
